St Mary's from Radcliffe Square
At the southern side of the square is the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, with its tall spire. This is the official church of Oxford University and is where the Oxford Martyrs were tried for heresy.
The University Church of St Mary the Virgin is one of England’s most historically important and highly visited churches. Currently, St Mary’s is a more public building than at any time in its history. In addition to being a centre for worship, over 300,000 people per year visit as tourists and pilgrims, and the church is a popular venue for concerts, lectures and public events.
